Blueberry, also known as bilberry or whortleberry (Vaccinium myrtillus), is a heath plant belonging to the genus Vaccinium. Blueberry is a deciduous shrub that easily grows to about 10-50 cm in height in the forest, but on arctic hill slopes, it remains closer to the ground. The leaves of the blueberry turn to beautiful shades of red during the autumn season before falling off with the arrival of winter.
Blueberry blooms in southern Finland from May to July. In Lapland, the beginning of flowering is often delayed by the cold and sometimes snowy early summer. Berries can be picked from July to even October, depending largely on weather conditions. Fortunately, blueberries may also self-pollinate if the early summer with its bees is late. It cannot be criticized for being picky about growing conditions because it thrives in moist soil and also tolerates shade. The blue color of the blueberry comes from the grayish-blue wax layer on the surface of the berry, but sometimes you can also find wax-free, black blueberries.
Blueberries can also be considered a "superfood" as they are rich in both vitamin A and B, as well as manganese, fiber, and flavonoids.Studies have shown that blueberries can help alleviate symptoms of certain diseases, thanks to the anthocyanins present in them.
So, blueberries are versatile - both in taste and color, they are excellent berries when picked straight from the forest and enjoyed.
However, who wouldn't enjoy them in juice or jam as well?
